Health Benefits of Using the Siwak

بِسْمِ ﷲِ ال َّ رحْمٰنِ ال َّ رحِیْمِ
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Siwak, also known as miswak, is an integral part of hygiene according to the Sunnah. The significance of using siwak is so great that the Prophet SAWS said:
“Were it not hardship for my nation, I would have commanded them to use the toothstick with every prayer as they perform ablution.” [Musnad Ahmad 26763]
In another hadith, the Prophet SAWS also said:
“Siwak is a means of purification for the mouth and is pleasing to the Lord.” [Sunan an-Nasa’i 5]
Now that we know the spiritual benefits, let’s look into the many health benefits of using the siwak:

Removes Plaque

Throughout the day as we consume food and drink, layers of dental plaque form on the teeth and tongue. This plaque is the reason for odor in the mouth as well as a source of energy for bacteria. If it’s not removed properly, it leads to all sorts of dental problems and diseases.
Siwak is known to be a gentler and more natural approach to removing plaque in comparison to synthetic toothbrushes. It not only gets rid of the buildup but also thoroughly cleans the mouth to prevent bacteria from multiplying.

Prevents Gum Diseases

Modern-day toothbrushes paired with fluoride-packed toothpaste do very little to keep gums healthy. Studies show that the rate of receding gums and other gingival health issues is on the rise.

As we’ve mentioned before, siwak is packed with antibacterial properties. With regular use of the siwak, as recommended by the Prophet SAWS, you can prevent bacterial infections from developing.
Keep in mind, oral bacterial infections don’t stay stagnant. They can spread from tissue to tissue and reach your throat, and even your lungs, causing respiratory issues. So, cut the problem at its root by incorporating siwak into your dental care routine.

Freshens Breath

Let’s face it, regular toothpaste, mints, and mouthwashes can only keep your breath fresh for a limited amount of time. Plus, these are loaded with stripping ingredients which kill the healthy bacteria in your mouth and leave it extremely dry.
It’s all a deadly cycle to keep you using the product in hopes of achieving fresh breath one day.
